Love/hate relationship with microphones

I tend to have a love/hate relationship with microphones. Placementis crucial for the oboe, but it’s hard to find just the right spot. Too high on the instrument and you pick up reed buzz and breathing. Too close to the instrument and you pick up key noise. Too low and you miss the best resonance of the center of the range, where most oboe music is written.

The Beauty and the Beast musical I’m playing this week is usuing a different style of mics – not the clip ons I’ve seen before (which are not great), but ones that Velcro on the bell and have a mini boom to get the actual microphone off the instrument by several inches. I was very dubious, but the sound technician says the sound is good. Who knew!
